Problem Statement

Inadequate Structured Support Services for Caregivers of Persons with Disabilities

Caregivers, in their caregiving journey are in need of support for self-care, respite options and training programmes, especially those experiencing moderate to high levels of stress. In many service models, the priority of care is on persons with disabilities; support services catering to caregivers as the primary beneficiaries are few and far between. Furthermore, the support for caregivers ceases when their care recipients leave the service at transition points.

Solution

Develop a Comprehensive Family Support System for Caregivers of Persons with Disabilities:

This project seeks to continually support such caregivers by:

  • Developing and implementing a Caregiver Needs Assessment Tool (customized for caregivers of persons with disabilities in Singapore) to assess caregivers’ needs;
  • Using a targeted and person-centric approach to address caregivers with moderate to high needs through case management and counselling services;
  • Providing a suite of caregiver support services - Information & referral services, respite programmes, caregiver education and skills training, and a Caregivers Care Network to enhance support from caregivers to caregivers and strengthen each caregiving family’s resilience.

Outcomes

Caregivers will benefit from a tiered and person-centric approach to their needs. Caregivers who are highly stressed or at risk of suffering from burn-out will be identified in a more timely manner and provided with appropriate support.
